Overcoming Propane Tank Explosions with Swift Fire Department Response

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita Fire Department successfully gained control of a dangerous situation on July 6, 2023 at a shopping center in south Wichita after exploding propane tanks triggered a fire. The WFD reported that the explosions caused a 50-foot ball of flames to shoot up in the air.

Three businesses were affected by the incident, but fortunately, most of the damage was contained to the exterior of the area near Hydraulic and Wassall. As firefighters arrived at the scene, they were met with a series of explosions caused by eight 100-pound propane cylinders. Astonishingly, one of these cylinders was propelled approximately 600 feet westward, puncturing the roof of a vacant house. Thankfully, there was no fire reported at the vacant property.

During the incident, one person sustained an injury, although the severity remains unknown, as the individual transported themselves to a nearby hospital. Witnessing the chaotic scene from Shooters Bar and Grill, Chris Perales paused his game of pool to look outside. He described the explosions as “immaculate” and recounted feeling the impact from the blast, even from a distance of half a block.

Perales expressed concern for the well-being of those involved, stating, “It really hit the heart from half a block away. I was hoping that everyone was alright.” The Wichita Fire Department will maintain a presence at the scene throughout Thursday night to ensure no re-ignition occurs.

As Wichita firefighters continue to address the fire near Hydraulic and Wassall, the strip mall’s parking lot remains blocked off to allow for an effective response.
