NPGA Pursues Nearly $1 Million in Federal Safety Grants

Proposed PHMSA funding could strengthen hazmat training, rail safety, and emergency preparedness across the propane industry.

The National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) has applied for nearly $1 million in grant funding through the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). If approved, the funding would support several safety initiatives focused on hazardous materials transportation, emergency response education, and public awareness.

The grant applications center on three proposed projects: expanding rail transportation safety resources, developing additional train-the-trainer programs for propane safety educators, and creating broader hazardous materials awareness materials for industry employees and local communities. The proposals reflect the industry’s continued emphasis on improving safety practices while preparing propane businesses for evolving transportation and regulatory challenges.

PHMSA’s Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness grant programs are designed to improve hazardous materials safety through education, planning, and emergency response capabilities. Competition for these grants is typically strong, and funding decisions are made after a federal review process.

For propane marketers, distributors, and transport companies, expanded training resources could provide valuable support for employees’ professional development and operational safety. Enhanced educational materials may also help companies strengthen their relationships with local emergency responders by promoting consistent communication and preparedness before an incident occurs.

Rail transportation continues to play an important role in moving propane throughout many regions of the country. Additional training and educational resources could also help companies review their transportation procedures, emergency planning, and coordination with carriers as supply chains continue to evolve.

Whether or not the grants are ultimately approved, the applications demonstrate the propane industry’s ongoing investment in safety, training, and emergency preparedness. As regulatory expectations occasionally shift, companies that regularly evaluate their safety programs, maintain thorough documentation, and invest in employee education are generally better positioned to reduce operational risk and improve long-term performance.

Recommendations for Retailers
Keep an eye on future announcements from the NPGA and PHMSA regarding the status of these grant applications and any resulting training opportunities. Review your current hazardous materials training program to identify areas where additional education could benefit your drivers, technicians, and office personnel. Strengthen relationships with local fire departments and emergency management agencies before an emergency occurs, and periodically review transportation and emergency response procedures to ensure that they remain current with industry best practices.
