Propane Truck Crash Causes Major Closure on VA’s I-395 Southbound; Safety Measures Emphasized

Arlington, VA – An accident involving a propane truck resulted in the closure of multiple lanes on Interstate 395 Southbound, near Shirlington Circle, on Wednesday, July 6, around 1:15 pm. The incident required the response of hazmat crews and emergency personnel to assess the damage and condition of the propane tank, as reported by Arlington Fire and EMS officials. Efforts to upright the truck and clear the scene were conducted in collaboration with authorities and a towing company.

Three individuals involved in the crash were taken to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover. Details regarding the cause of the accident and the number of vehicles involved remain unclear at this time.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) provided Twitter updates, stating that initially, all lanes of Interstate 395 Southbound, except the exit to King Street, were closed due to the crash. Subsequently, the situation escalated, leading to the closure of Interstate 395 Southbound at Glebe Road as well. However, following the completion of the investigation and the scene’s cleanup, the roadway was reopened around 3:30 pm.

Although factors that contributed to the crash remain uncertain, incidents like this underscore the importance of stringent regulatory standards for propane truck drivers and companies. Adhering to regular gas and leak checks, performing proper employee training, attending to consistent tank maintenance, and keeping records accurate and current are all crucial aspects in ensuring the safety of communities and consumers.
